Two wins out of two for the club on Saturday, the 1st XV beating Marr 34-20 and the Mighty Threes beating Linlithgow 2s 24-17.
The 1st XV made hard work of it on Pitch 1, only opening up a convincing lead as newly promoted Marr began to tire towards the end of the game.
We led 13-10 at the interval, with Matt Morrell scoring a converted try on six minutes then Nick McCashin adding penalties on 30 and 38 minutes.
Marr, who bullied the breakdown as if they were Borderers rather than from the west coast, responded with a try and a penalty. Stand off Rory McGee also came close with another couple of spot kicks as we were repeatedly penalised at the breakdown.
The men from Troon started the second half well, opening up a 20-13 lead after a converted try and another penalty. A converted try from Mike Hanning on 56 minutes got us back on level terms, then further converted tries from Nick McCashin and hooker Hugh Lindsay secured our first win of the season (with a bonus point, to boot!)
Cash’s try came after a quick tap penalty and break by Fraser Strachan, while Hugh’s try involved an impressive break from the edge of Marr’s 22 at the road end.
Stu Wilson and Andrew Manson both caught the eye after coming off the bench in the final quarter, with Andrew’s rapid service allowing our backs to ask serious questions of the Marr defence.
