For the first time in a while, all three teams won at Inverleith yesterday, the 1st XV defeating Watsonians in a 14-13 nailbiter on Pitch 1, the 2s beating Hillhead Jordanhill 6-3 on Pitch 2 and the Mighty Threes putting Preston Lodge 2s to the sword 75-15 in the early game.
The 1st XV started very brightly against Watsonians, Matt Morrell touching down in the far corner at the Ferry Road end in the opening minutes. Cash then added a couple of penalties, but Watsonians replied in kind to make it 11-6 at half time.
Watsonians started to turn the screw during the second half, a yellow card to Ruaridh Stewart not long after half time not helping our cause.
Cash landed another penalty on 48 minutes to take the score to 14-6, but the Watsonians pack then drove over to make it 14-13 after the successful conversion.
We hung on grimly for the rest of the game, tackling like tigers before finally securing the win after winning a Watsonians scrum against the head in our own 22.
The win keeps the 1st XV in fourth place in the league, one point behind Selkirk and three behind Watsonians. We’ve another big home game next week, against a resurgent GHA.
