The 1s were playing into a strong wind in the first half at Kelso, and turned round 16-10 down.
A penalty from Seb edged us ahead after two minutes, then two Kelso penalties took the score to 6-3. Adam Greig then crossed for a converted try after 13 minutes, but our hosts hit back with a penalty and a converted try of their own before the break.
Phil Cringle had been carded for offside just before the break, which hadn’t helped!
With the wind at our backs in the second half, we enjoyed the bulk of territory and possession. Craig Marshall scored a converted try ten minutes after the restart to give us a 17-16 lead, then a fine drop goal from Liam and a penalty from Seb edged us further ahead with only 5 minutes left to play.
Kelso mounted a last gasp assault on our line, but some fantastic, bodies-on-the-line defence from the men in red, black and gold meant that, when the try came, it was wide out on the far touchline. The resulting conversion attempt fell short, and the whistle went shortly afterwards to clinch a fine win.
Up in Currie, the 2s were leading until the last play of the game, when (with the ball at our side of a ruck) one of our players asked the ref how long was left to play. This was interpreted as ‘verbals’, and Currie scored the equalising try from the resulting penalty!
These results leave both XVs in sixth place in their respective league tables.
