Stew Mel Rugby

3rd XV

" I know that the main scheme (of rugby) is to work the ball down the field somehow and deposit it over the line at the other end and that, in order to squalch this programme, each side is allowed to put in a certain amount of assault and battery and do things to its fellow man which, if done elsewhere, would result in 14 days without the option, coupled with some strong remarks from the Bench."

P. G. Wodehouse (1930)

After a marathon season in 2007/08 - in which we used a small army of players and took part in countless matches against (mostly) new opposition - the league has been split for 2008/09.

Thanks to our top half finish, we remain in the 2nd XV League Division 4E (Edinburgh & South), which has been trimmed down to a more manageable 10 teams.

That said, it is still a tough looking league. Our old adversaries - the Nails, Rodneys and 'Sonians 3rd XVs - are still there, along with the best of the 'new teams' from last year, namely the 2nd XVs of Forrester, Linlithgow, Lasswade and Grangemouth. Add to that the promoted 2nd XVs of Murrayfield Wanderers and Livingston and we have an interesting season ahead.

As always, it's going to be good fun and a good standard of rugby, but this time we've another new challenge and a competitive league to get our teeth into. With a good level of commitment from our regulars and some fresh blood, we're more than capable of making an impact in this smaller league.

We're always on the lookout for new players of any age and/or ability to join us. The 3rd XV selectors are generally able to draw on a potent mix of newcomers to the club, young players, 'resting' 2nd XV players and players who are unable to train but can still play rugby to a decent standard.

If you fit the bill, please contact managers Ric Clark, John Hughes or Brodie Smithers via this link, or, if you're really brave, then come down to training on a Tuesday or Thursday night at 6.30 pm on the back pitches at Inverleith.

Coaches for season 2008/09
