Stew Mel Rugby

Gordon's Gin

You'd never think, to look at the svelte physique of our esteemed 1st XV Manager, that he likes the odd shandy now and again. So imagine my surprise when I innocently asked him to list the ingredients of the fabled Stew Mel Cocktail, and he came up with the following:

"The contents include Grenadine, Advocaat and Guinness. I think the Advocaat goes on the bottom, Grenadine in the middle, topped off with Guinness.

"Famous drinks from the past years include :

Mexican or Russian Arsehole
This was introduced by Kelvin Strachan, a South African who played hooker for us in the early 1990s. The bloke was slightly mad and the drink consisted of a measure of Tequila (Mexican) or Vodka (Russian), topped up with Tabasco sauce. Quite probably the most vile drink ever!

The Grenade
The first foreigner at the club, Mike Foster in season 1990-91, introduced us to a drink he named 'The Grenade' as it blew your head off. This consisted of a measure of Vodka, Bacardi, Baileys and Creme de Menthe, served in a pint glass, topped up with Coke.

Jack & Coke
Aussie ace Peter Jorgensen was a big Jack Daniels and Coke man. He knew Jack so well, he's apparently allowed to call him John. Jorgo's last night as a Stew Mel player resulted in the ultimate Tequila frenzy. This was on the way home from Kelso and included stops in Gala where we are still not welcome at the Salmon Inn! Benzo can still remember the state the Stew Mel boys were in as we left Poynder Park that evening, but nobody seems to remember the score from the game!

Champers
Edinburgh Captain Graeme Burns was a big Champagne drinker in his youth at Stew Mel and, when the 'Champagne for all my friends' call went up, an orderly procession followed behind the skipper. His sister, young 'Effie', only a couple of weeks ago introduced the club to Champagne & Apple Sourz, and I, for one, think it should be known from now on as the 'Effie'.

The Charlie Tait
Consisting of a double gin, a double vodka and orange, this was the favourite drink of former club legend Charlie Tait. Charlie used to say 'This will sort you out, Gordon', as he handed me one - and he was right. Vaguely remember having a violent altercation with a hotel door after downing a CT on tour - the lady from reception took it surprisingly well!

The G&T
Legendary Stew Mel stories from the Sevens circuit usually revolve around Black Al Bin Laden's favourite tipple of G&T, and many a fine man has learnt the art of drinking G&T's in various car parks around the Greenyards and Riverside Park in late spring. The ingredients for this are: Ice, Lemon, tonic water and a generous helping of Gordon's Gin. Lovely!"
