Match Report
With a large number of players looking for
a game, there were a few unlucky individuals who had to
miss out. A squad rotation system may have to be brought
in!
Jedi was demoted to the 2s at the last minute and we were
given Shagger in return. Now, I know Shagger is an accomplished
player and has been a tremendous servant to the club (and
many others throughout northern Edinburgh) ... but I still
thought a slot at full back would be asking too much of
even him. Dave Hourston moved up from the bench and put
in a fine performance, solid in defence and always able
to beat the first tackle in attack.
The sides were very evenly matched, but we came through
thanks to a gutsy, determined performance against a fresher,
fitter and younger team who had only lost once previously.
It took some time for us to realise this was a game for
the 'stuff it up your jumper' approach at least in
the Uni 22. We held on well in the difficult last 10 minutes
when there was only five points in it.
Should also mention my very poor touch judging
performance - sending the water bottles flying and blatantly
not keeping up with play to give the students a line out
a metre outside our 22 when the whole Stew Mel team said
Dave H was inside the 22. In my defence, I had just been
stung by nettles after retrieving the ball.
The post match food was perfect for a winter's evening:
soup and a link sausage roll.
Special mention should also go to Dave H's good lady for
transporting Danger and me via two pubs for our pub crawl
into town.

Shaft 1 (Danger's second try, our third) |
| Leading Lion |
An easy choice here, although was tempted to give
the award to Coylie for turning up!
Has to be our hat-trick bagging Number
9 - even if his total scoring carries only
amounted to 5 yards ...
|
| Cowardly Lion (FTWOO) |
Shaft for his
conversion miss in front of the posts, which could
have been crucial. Rumours that he only gets to kick
as he possesses the only tee are, I understand, only
somewhat exaggerated.
Could have been Craig Shrimpton for his three minute
cameo, abruptly ended by a pulled muscle - but, to
offset that, he did take a two handed lineout
catch.
|
| Special Mention |
To Lindsay Ross,
whose debut for this season prompted us to reverse
our normal captaincy tradition and give it to him
as the oldest player (was Graham Mitchell disappointed?).
Bonker was old enough to be the father of more than
half the players on the pitch on Saturday, and was
also old enough to conduct an in-depth analysis of
the laws with the referee that lasted the entire match.
