Stew Mel vs Selkirk,
13/10/07
Inverleith Angle
I extend a very warm welcome to Selkirk Rugby Football
Club, their President George Thomson, his committee and
supporters for this afternoon's game.
This afternoon's match sponsor is Abercrombie Financial
Services, and I would like to thank them for their continuing
support and also to welcome Robin Hendry and his guests
to Inverleith.
The last two weeks have seen a marked improvement in the
performances of the 1st XV, which have seen them come away
with a hard fought win at home against Biggar, 17-13, and
then against Hamilton where they ending up winning 10-38.
Hopefully this afternoon we will witness the continuing
development of the team.
The match against Biggar marked Jimmy Moran's return after
being injured in the pre season friendly against Blaydon
and Craig Joiner's first outing of the season.
Two weeks ago the 2nd XV lost their away match 27-17 to
Ayr, but turned that round last week with a 46-16 win against
Currie. Due to a number of players returning from injury
and to the Club, there is an increase in the level of competition
for places in both the 1st XV and the 2nd XV. This can only
be a benefit to the Club.
It is interesting to note the experiences of two of our
players who have recently returned to the 2nd XV after long
term injuries. Unfortunately, both players were unable to
stay on the park for their first game back - and this was
not due to lack of fitness. Both were shown yellow cards,
one after 60 minutes while the other one only lasted 10
minutes!
The 3rd XV started the season in great style by winning
their first four matches but they have unfortunately lost
their last two games. They lost at home to Linlithgow 2nds
19-62, when the visitors were warming up a full 45 minutes
before kick off and long before many of the home players
had arrived for the game! The next defeat was at the hands
of Edinburgh Accies, when they lost the match 81-0. As only
twelve players turned up for the match, perhaps the result
was no great surprise. The match report on the Club's website
summed it up - 'Greater commitment is needed, not only on
the field, but in terms of turning up to games, as well'.
