Riggers' Review

Selkirk at home, 4/10/03

A much improved performance saw our third 5 point win of the season. I think everyone was happier this week than last, but, then again, it wasn't going to take much for there to be an improvement. An old Selkirk worthy told me after the game that we weren't very good, just better than Selkirk, and that we shouldn't get carried away with the win. I guess time will tell if we are back on the right track, and going to Dundee High on Saturday will give a good indication of where we stand.

The forwards fronted up for the battle this week, and, for the first 20 minutes or so of the second half, some of their driving play was superb. We maybe overdid it on occasion, with the final man getting isolated, but it was a massive improvement on previous weeks' efforts. Decision making and communication are the two key elements of that part of our game, and that is something that will be worked on this week.

The backs continue to look dangerous. 17 of our 22 tries have come from the men behind the scrum this season, and, with Struan crossing the line twice for his first 1st XV tries since 13th October 2001, we must be moving in the right direction. The next challenge will be to get our Captain over the try line. That drought goes back even longer, but I'm sure, with the way he's playing and leading the side at the moment, it won't be too long before he is crossing for a 5 pointer. No pressure, Chris!

I reckon we probably played well for 65 minutes of the game on Saturday, which was enough to secure the points, but these quiet spells are still causing concern. We will need to perform for the whole duration up at Mayfield on Saturday, and the defence, whilst considerably better than it has been, will need to improve once again.

We will go to Mayfield in a positive frame of mind. We can only hope for a more accomplished performance than we produced on our visit up there last season. On that day we lost to a team playing with 14 men for an hour of the game. That is the sort of determination that Dundee have. It is a massive challenge to play against a team playing so well, but, hopefully, we can raise our own performance to another level.

Referee Benzo's old mate Gary Duncan of Ellon, who evidently never received the edition of 'Be a Rugby Ref' magazine that dealt with the Advantage rule
Single Sentence Summary A much better team performance against a lively Selkirk side - to score three tries playing into a strong wind in the second half shows how well things are going offensively, while our defence was much tighter throughout the 80
Leading Lion Paul Wharakura gets the nod - he really got about the pitch today, punched a lot of holes in the Selkirk defence for our Backs to exploit, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself after a great break in the first half
Bevvy Bulletin Nowt - what with the players' wives, thirsty Souters drowning their sorrows, a bevvy of reunited 'Daniels' from the 1950s and three teams at home, the bar at Invers was heaving. So I was leaving.
