Match Report
A grim day with the silvery Tay in sight
saw a display as unconvincing as McGonagall's 'verse', but
a "a win's a win for a' that" - just wait until
we visit Alloway!
With the wind and rain at our back and playing down the
Mayfield slope, the first half was about trying to put points
on the board. An encouraging start was made and, within
the first 12 minutes, we had posted a 13-0 lead through
a Phil Hendry converted try after a strong Stu Donald break,
sandwiched between two Scott Bowman penalties. Scott had
also slotted the conversion.
Things looked even rosier when Jed Gordon scored early
in the second quarter but we were unable to increase our
tally as our opponents started to come back into the game,
culminating in an injury time score when the ball squirted
out of the side of our scrum on our line and was pounced
on by one of their players. Half time 18-5.
The second half was the proverbial uphill struggle and
even more so when, midway through the period, Dundee scored
a try through their backs after good lineout ball. But,
fortunately, the seemingly easy conversion was pushed wide,
leaving them two scores in arrears.
The match ebbed and flowed from there with more than a
few scary moments. It was, however, secured for us with
minutes to go when Gav Sharp latched onto the ball to score
from 30m. Scott converted. Andrew Fraser then scored a well
deserved try from distance after an outstanding performance
and Scott's conversion gave us a rather flattering 32-10
victory.
Even getting a team out after late call-offs had been an
achievement. Dave Hourston, Scott McDougall and Gav all
started in the team for a league match for the first time
this season, and it was also Si Rowan's season debut when
he came on after twenty minutes to shore up the second row.
Our other sub Chico also got a run, replacing Dave with
twenty minutes to go.
Given the circumstances, a gutsy performance, and more
will be required next week when the first half of the league
season ends with a home match against Murrayfield Wanderers,
who only lost to Gala by a point on Saturday - no easy games!
