Match
Report
Saturday afternoon saw the 2nd XV back at
home in the sunshine of Inverleith to play Currie.
The game got off to a flying start with Dave McCall, back
from a spell away, breaking through the defence and offloading
to the supporting Matt Targowski. Unfortunately, Matt was
dragged down just before the line and Currie were able to
regroup and relieve the pressure.
It wasn't long before we were on the attack again, though,
and, after some great handling and running from the backs,
we came away with quick tries from Dave Roland, Alex Cox
and Victor Awuse.
It was clear early on that Currie were going to play a
highly physical game up front and were sticking to a game
plan of hitting in close around the ruck. This resulted
in us giving away some needless penalties around the breakdown
area, which halted our progress and allowed Currie to get
back into the game.
Currie also managed to score a drop goal, taking advantage
of a free ball from another ruck infringement, which was
followed by a try through the middle after a hefty period
of pressure from the visiting team.
The second half started with a similar tempo to the first.
Stew Mel scored tries through Victor - this time a crash
ball in the centre allowed him to power his way to the line
- and another from Dave Roland, which came about after a
majestic cross-field kick from Phil, which Dave was able
to follow over the line and dive on.
Coxy also got another try by dancing his way through the
midfield, but this was instantly matched by one from Currie.
With two minutes to go, we were desperate to end on a high,
and some miscommunication in the Currie attack allowed Fergal
to pounce on a dropped ball and run under the sticks to
finish the game.
A good performance from the team, which was, undoubtedly,
due to the numbers we had down at training all week, and,
consequently, the numbers of players we had to select from.
If the 2nds want to compete in their league, we need to
have competition for places, and, with a number of players
due back from injury this week and next, there are undoubtedly
going to be some much needed selection headaches coming
up shortly.
