Riggers'
Review

It was that well known philosopher Forrest
Gump who once foisted upon the world the immortal 'Life's
a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get'.
I am unsure if this was said about the Stewart's Melville
FP 1st XV, but, on the performances so far this season,
it would be an apt summary.
Saturday's defeat at Inverleith to Kelso was as disappointing
as they come. A listless, rudderless 80 minutes of rugby
from a team who are so much better than that, and, indeed,
just 7 days previously, had produced 25 minutes of rugby
that was as near to flawless as anybody with the club could
have hoped for.

It is the coaches you feel sorry for after performances
like this. They can provide the players with all the tools
to do the job, but, if the players don't have the top two
inches right and don't have a bit of pride when pulling
on the jersey, then it will be a very long season.
The whole performance was made even more galling by the
performance in the last five minutes, when the team suddenly
found the urgency and desire to score two tries and come
within a score of stealing the points. Quite why it too
so long to wake out of the slumbers is a question only the
players can answer.

But credit to Kelso. They showed what it is like to play
with a bit of passion about their rugby, and to give their
all for the cause. They are a young team needing to battle
for every point and probably found life easier than they
could ever have hoped for when they drove up to Edinburgh.
To turnover the amount of ball that they did was incredible
to watch, both in terms of admiration for their foraging
skills and despondency at the lack of skill we had when
we took the ball into contact.

Still, the game is over and we are still in the battle;
just clinging on by our finger nails, but we are still there.
We know, more than anybody, that you can catch teams up
with a good run, and over the last few years we have certainly
performed better in the league from December onwards. If
that form can, once again, be produced, then we could still
be having a big party at the end of the season

| Single Sentence Summary |
A gutless and error strewn performance
against a young Kelso side who basically wanted the
victory more than we did - the way we played, you'd
think it was us who were on the fringes of the relegation
zone and not them |
| Leading Lion |
Pete McLean made some good ground with the ball in
hand today, Richie Vernon took his try superbly and
Murray Allan's appearance from the bench was a major
factor in our late revival. But, given the overall
nature of the team's (non) performance, don't think
we'll bother with a Leading Lion this week.

Plenty of sorrows to drown, so we did our best to
sink them under a sea of Magners. Just as well the
young McNie was on hand to act as an auxiliary glass
gatherer for the hard pressed bar staff, really.
