Stew Mel Rugby

Stew Mel vs Hillhead Jordanhill, 12/4/08

Inverleith Angle

This afternoon is the last league match for Season 2007-08, and we find ourselves playing the 'home' fixture at Murrayfield rather than Inverleith. The reason for this unusual situation is that today's is a rearranged fixture, which was postponed back in January, and the posts are now all down at Inverleith. We are very grateful to Murrayfield Wanderers and the SRU for the help and assistance they have given us with the arrangements for today's match.

I extend a warm welcome to all supporters this afternoon, especially those who have travelled through from Glasgow.

As it is the last fifteen-a-side match of the season, I would like to record my thanks to all the coaches, players, committee and supporters for all that they have done for the Club during the season. I would also like to thank all the sponsors for the support they have given to the Club this season. We now start the planning for next season's campaign!

The 2nd XV avoided relegation with some good results at the end of the season. The 3-35 win against Watsonians was, I understand, a great game of rugby despite the number of red and yellow cards that were awarded.

The 3rd XV has also finished its League campaign with victories against Lismore (38-5) and Preston Lodge (7-38). Well done to the players and the team's managers. Today the 3rd XV are going up to play St Andrews University in the annual VarCity Cup match.

On Wednesday evening I watched the Barbarians take on Edinburgh Accies in a match to celebrate the Accies' 150th Anniversary. Ross Samson was selected to play for the BaaBaas and ended up on the score sheet by scoring one of their seven tries. It is always good to see a Stew Mel boy score against the Accies! It was a great game of rugby and a fitting way to mark this milestone.

A few tickets are still available for the Sportsman's Dinner on 17th May. If you would like to come along please contact Andrew Hannay. The cost is £35 a ticket. The speakers are former international referee Jim Fleming, Joe Camay and John Gahagan.

Tonight is the Club's Annual Dinner and Prizegiving and we have over 80 players, both current and past, committee and supporters attending the Dinner at Inverleith. I'm sure that we'll have an enjoyable evening.
