Referee Andrew McMenemy of (gulp) Gala - cue calls of 'Awa, ya Gawly b*stard!' at various points from the sizeable home support. Had a pretty decent game, handling the intermittent punch ups sensibly without the use of cards - maybe it was his uncanny resemblance to a young John Lydon that made the players heed what he was saying to them ...
Single Sentence Summary Not exactly champagne rugby - it was more a day for soup than champagne - but a professional performance against a stuffy Linden side that never stopped trying and attacked throughout the game
Leading Lion

Good, if unspectacular, performances from a lot of the players today, with Pete McLean seeing a lot of the ball and Andrew 'Uppercut' Easson as solid as ever. But Colin Goudie gets the nod for an assured 1st XV debut - good hands, intelligent kicking and an eye for gaps in the Linden defence.

Bevvy Bulletin

Had assumed that I would have to head for the nearest Hawick hotel for pre-match pints, but it turned out that Linden have a fine (and recently refurbished) bar at the back of their stand, chock full of Borders rugby memorabilia and with direct access to the kitchen and the back of the stand.

The beer was nothing to write home about (Guinness, T******s, etc), but the convivial atmosphere more than made up for that - what a great wee club!

Pie Points No pies, but some superb homemade lentil soup at half time, then mince and tatties afterwards - oh, and homemade tablet that was being sold for the Jonny Mitchell Appeal. Excellent!
