Stew Mel vs Haddington,
26/1/08
Inverleith Angle
I extend a very warm welcome to Inverleith today to Haddington
Rugby Football Club, their President Bill Swan, his committee
and supporters.
This afternoon's match sponsor is Abercrombie Financial
Services and I would like to thank Robin Hendry for his
continuing support of the Club and to welcome Robin and
his guests to Inverleith.
Welcome also to Nick Penny from Savills
and his guests. We trust all involved will have an enjoyable
afternoon.
When we played Haddington earlier in the season, in what
I believe was one of the best games I've watched this season,
we returned home with a 12-25 win. I'm sure that today we
will again have to fight hard for every point in what I'm
sure will be a keenly contested match.
Last week all three teams managed to come second! The 1st
XV lost to Kelso 31-15, the 2nd XV lost to Glasgow Hawks
6-8 and the 3rd XV lost 43-5 to Lasswade. The result for
the 2nd XV shows how much the team has progressed, as they
lost earlier in the season to Glasgow Hawks 54-3. Keep up
the progress, boys!
Last week we welcomed Liam Casey back after injury. He even
got voted Leading Lion with the comment "he may only
have played a half, but that was the one where the forwards
got the bit between their teeth and gave us something to
cheer about. Despite only just coming back from injury,
he looked his usual hard-as-nails self." Hopefully
we'll see more of that today!
Our last home game against Hillhead Jordanhill was called
off because the ground was frozen, and we understand that
the provisional date for the rearranged fixture is 23rd
February. Please check the Club's website for confirmation
of the date and time of the fixture, as it's the same day
that Scotland are away to Ireland.
The Sportsman's Dinner will take place at Inverleith on
Saturday 17th May. The evening will be opened by former
international referee Jim Fleming and then we have a couple
of top notch speakers in Joe Camay and John Gahagan. Joe
Camay has had Inverleith in stitches before now with his
deadpan delivery and bawdy banter, while former Motherwell
and Morton footballer John Gahagan comes highly recommended.
The Dinner is always one of the highlights of the Club's
social calendar, as well as being an important fundraiser
for the Club. Tickets are priced at £35. Please book
early to avoid disappointment! Please contact Andrew
Hannay or Allan Munro
as soon as possible to secure your place (or places - tables
are available, as usual).
A Happy New Year to you and all the best for 2008!
Mike Sims
