Stew Mel vs Glasgow
Hawks, 7/4/07
Inverleith Angle
Welcome to Inverleith for today's SHE Scottish Cup quarter
final tie with Glasgow Hawks. To Kenny Hamilton and his
Club's players, committee and supporters, we hope you enjoy
the day and that a good, hard game of rugby takes place.
For Stewart's Melville FPRFC, a win would take us through
to our first ever semi-final, whereas, for Glasgow Hawks,
they are treading what is a well worn path for them.
The league season ended a couple of weeks ago in disappointing
fashion through at Dumbreck, where Cartha QP edged a close
encounter 29-22. It was another case of what could have
been, when a strong start to the second half saw us turn
from 17-8 down to 22-17 ahead. Unfortunately the score which
would have knocked the stuffing out of Cartha never came,
and they managed to dominate possession towards the end
of the game and secure the win.
Last weekend saw the first outing for the Sevens squad
in the City of Edinburgh tournament at Boroughmuir. The
draw wasn't kind and saw us paired with an Edinburgh Rugby
team which included Dave McCall, Andy Kelly, Matt Dey and
Andy Easson, plus Ben Cairns and Alan MacDonald, two former
stars of the mini section. A decent performance couldn't
deny a comfortable Edinburgh victory, and we progressed
to the Plate competition. Victories over Watsonians, Haddington
and Edinburgh University (the latter 60-17 in the final)
ensured that some silverware came to Inverleith.
Congratulations to the squad of Stephen Dalgleish, Richie
Vernon, Pete McLean, Phil Hendry, Stuart Goudie, Jamie Hood,
Colin Goudie, Richard Borthwick, Alex Cox and Gavin Sharp.
The bad news on the day was that Andy Easson suffered a
broken leg in the semi-final for Edinburgh, and we all wish
him a speedy recovery.
The representative scene continues to see Stewart's Melville
players picked to represent Scotland. Ross Rennie has been
in Hong Kong with the Scotland Seven; Richie Vernon, Dave
McCall, Andy Easson, Colin Goudie and Alex Cox have all
represented Scotland U20; while we wish all the best to
Aidy Duncan, Murray Allan, Ross Samson and Angus Dixon,
who are in Ireland with Scotland U19s.
As is always the case at this time of the season, we say
our farewells to our foreign contingent who have helped
out during the season. Both Areta Tanoai and Jebb Sinclair
have departed these shores and we wish them all the success
in the future. Jebb, in particular, made a big impact in
the short time he was here, even if most of it wasn't for
deeds on the pitch!
I would like to finish the final Inverleith Angle of the
season with a few 'thank you's:
