Stew Mel vs Glasgow Hawks, 15/11/09

Inverleith Angle

I extend a warm welcome to Kenny Baillie, Chief Executive of Hawks, his committee, Peter Wright and his coaching staff, Nick Cox and his team, to Inverleith.

Glasgow Hawks were formed in 1997 in response to the changing club scene and the professional era. They are a combination of two famous clubs, Glasgow High (Kelvinside) and Glasgow Accies. In their short history they have won the Premiership three times. They boast a full time Director of Rugby in the formidable shape of Peter Wright.

Last weekend all three teams played Boroughmuir, and, unfortunately, all three sides were ultimately unsuccessful. The 1st XV game was a tremendous match, and, when we edged into the lead with ten minutes remaining, we looked capable of going on to win. Sadly, it was not to be, and it was most disappointing to come away without at least a bonus point. From a Scotland (but not Stew/Mel) point of view, it was good to see David Callam back in action for Boroughmuir. I managed to watch most of the Seconds match at Meggetland and was most encouraged by the quality of the youngsters in that team.

Since I last wrote, we managed to record our first victory of the season against Watsonians. Although this season has been tough, we are now, I believe, roughly the same standard as our Edinburgh Premiership neighbours. Our team has developed and progressed since the start of the season, and I look forward to, hopefully, reversing the result we suffered in Glasgow in September.

A grateful parent phoned me recently to congratulate me on the Minis set up. Although this is absolutely nothing to do with me, I accepted his congratulations and passed on his good wishes to Mrs Lineen and all concerned. Speaking of ladies that do their bit, take a bow Eileen Hughes, who has been the Seconds physiotherapist for at least 10 years; not only that, but she supplies soup and sandwiches for away bus trips and helps out when required in the club house. It is volunteers like Eileen that are vital to the success of any rugby club.

I hope you enjoy the game today, and that you can join us in the Clubhouse afterwards, where Denise, Jessica and the staff can be relied upon to give you a warm welcome.
