The usual handful of changes for the first of the season's 'flipside' fixtures, against teams we have already played.

The only change in the backs sees fit again Hayden replace Liam at 15, with Liam dropping to the bench.

In the pack, Ryan Grant is released to us and starts in the front row, with Ross dropping to the bench to accommodate him. Paul and Harry replace Ben and Big Clarky, respectively, with Pip moving to Number 8 as a result.

Ross Sutherland returns to the squad after appearing for the 2s in recent weeks following his return from injury.

The starting hooker will be decided upon once we are able to assess injuries picked up at training tonight.

Hope to see a decent crowd down to cheer the boys on against a Hawks side that has stuttered somewhat in recent weeks.

If you are coming down, please bring a camera - Bill is missing the game this week, so would welcome any action photos (or even a match report!) You can mail your contributions to him here.

Match Report

Hawks at Inverleith, 15/11/09 - photo by Dave Patterson

Our first fixture against Hawks on the 5th of September was, in retrospect, a bit of an embarrassment; we didn't compete in the backs and the game ended strangely, with Scott Brewster receiving his red card for … nobody knows.

So, in the words of the RFU's Rob Andrew, this game represented progress, in that the losing 'gap' of 6 points represents a much more competitive game than the 'gap' of 46 in September. It is a measure of how far we have come since the start of the season that everyone was a bit disappointed to lose, rather than taking heart at the improvement. We have started to realise that we can compete at this level.

The game started well enough for us, although on arriving it was a disappointment to see that Ryan Grant (who did play well for us in the first game against Hawks) was unable to play, and that Pip was a late flu victim. Pip, Clarky and Blair are actually a match for any back row in Prem 1.

Hawks, although misfiring in the back line, reached half time 12-6 up with two tries to our two penalties, and, soon after the break, they increased their lead with two penalties. The Stew/Mel team at the start of the season would promptly have folded, but a burst out of our 22 from Harry and Hayden was finished off by Blair to see us only seven points adrift. Disappointingly, the conversion was missed, and Hawks regained the initiative through a penalty.

We were not finished, however, and substitute Liam fashioned some space from our own half to release Borth, who drew the full back in textbook manner to give Coxy the run to the line. Stu slotted the conversion and we were three points adrift - game on! Hawks, however, completed the scoring with a further penalty and so the game ended with two tries each but Hawks the victors.

To be honest, we had played better the previous few weeks, and it looked as if our exertions over these weeks had caught up with us. We looked a bit tired - however, on the positive side, Paul looked good with the ball in hand on the charge and Blair has taken a leaf out of Scott Brewster's book in deciding that Prem 1 holds no fears and enjoys the scrap. Hayden looked a better full back than the Hawks pro Adamson and all our backs gave Hawks little space.

A thought occurs to me, in that, if we had brought over a player from the Southern Hemisphere, we would have probably gone for a front row forward - yet it is our front row that has consistently been our strength this season, and Callum and Sam are obviously benefiting from the coaching they are getting.

Sadly, this was the last outing meantime for Jamie and Harry, as they are unable to find work in the Edinburgh area; both are hardy boys and are more than welcome back if their situation changes.

We were, once again, squeaky clean, with the only card going to the Hawks 12 on 39 minutes for not rolling away from the tackle

Referee Cammy Rudkin (Hawick)
Single Sentence Summary A bit of a lacklustre performance, by all accounts, with Hawks making the most of the high penalty count against us and our patchy tackling - yet another game that was there for the taking
Leading Lion

Moff named Harry as his man of the match in the paper this week, and I gather that Scotty put in another massive defensive performance - he must be getting tired of collecting the Big Hit Fund every match day!

But I'm going to go with the advice of the Vatican Ultras this week, as they seemed pretty unanimous in declaring Hayden Lingard our star performer against Hawks.

Hayden was involved in our first try, literally jumping out of tackles before offloading to Blair, and was at the heart of our best moves throughout the game.

Bevvy Bulletin Invers seemed pretty quiet by the time I pitched up around an hour after full time - well, it was a Sunday, after all, and most of the usual suspects seemed to have drunk themselves to a standstill during the customary Friday the 13th festivities two days before ...
Pie Points I gather that there were pies - and that Lindsay Muir had delivered the coup de grace to any that had made it through to the Committee Room after the game. Bad, beardy man!

Thanks to Riggers and Mike Sims for compiling this week's Stats
