Stew Mel vs GHA, 13/9/08

Inverleith Angle

I extend a very warm welcome to GHA RFC, their President Alex Millar, his committee and all their supporters to Inverleith for this round 3 match in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 2 League.

The 1st XV have had a great start to their season. With a home win against Peebles, the unchanged team travelled to a very wet Netherdale last weekend to play Gala. For a change the older Stewart's Melville team demonstrated its experience and character against the younger Gala team. Despite letting Gala take a fifteen point lead, the boys piled on the pressure in the second half and ended up scoring three tries, with only one conversion (which went over off the cross bar), to win the match 15-17. It's a long time since we went down to the Borders and scored three tries without any reply! The league will not be won in September, but we needed to get off to a good start, and the players and coaches should be pleased with their two wins so far, but I'm sure that their feet have been kept firmly on the ground. To use the old sporting cliché, we're taking one game at a time.

The only disappointment from last week was that Simon Rowan suffered a knee injury which means that he could be out for some time. We wish him a full and quick recovery.

The 2nd XV have also started their season in a very positive manner by recording a 10-36 win against Hillhead Jordanhill and then a 100-0 win against Cartha Queens Park last weekend at Inverleith. The 2nd XV were relegated from Division 1 of the 2nd XV Leagues at the end of last season as a result of a ruling by the 2nd XV League Committee, which we vigorously fought. Whilst we are all keen to get more people playing rugby, I'm not sure that teams getting beaten by 100 points is the right way to go about encouraging people to play rugby, but maybe last week's result was a one off.

The 3rd XV also got their season of to a winning start with a 35-25 victory over Linlithgow 2nd XV. They also suffered a disappointment when David Bain left the field with a shoulder injury and we wish him a full and quick recovery.

The Fireworks Party to mark the end of the Edinburgh Festival was well supported and was a great evening. Many thanks to Denise, Linda, Robin, Angela, Sue and Ek for organising what I hope will become an annual event.

A number of social events have been organised and I hope as many supporters and players as possible will be able to attend. The dates for your diary are:

Race Night - Inverleith on 11th October, 2008
Christmas Dance - Corn Exchange on 29th November, 2008
Burns' Supper - Inverleith on 24th January, 2009
