Stew Mel vs Dundee
HSFP, 25/10/08
Inverleith Angle
I extend a warm welcome to Derek Lawson, President of
Dundee HSFP Rugby, to his committee and all the supporters
who have travelled to Inverleith today. I also extend a
warm welcome to all the guests of Eric Young and Co. and
Shield and Kyd, our match sponsors today.
Two weeks ago we held a Past Players' lunch at Inverleith,
and we were delighted that over fifty past players, of all
vintages, were able to attend. It was interesting to establish
that the person with the longest association with the Club
started his playing record back in 1945 and he is still
a regular supporter of the Club today! Whilst Stewart's
Melville FP RFC was only formed in 1973, it shows that our
roots go further back into history.
I am sure that the Club supporters are used to the ups
and downs of the team. After a few bad results - well, four,
to be honest - the 1st XV got their season back on track
with a hard fought match against Musselburgh and then a
memorable "game of two halves" against Aberdeen
Grammar. The wind was a significant factor up at Rubislaw,
and some of the players didn't appreciate the strength of
the wind until they changed ends at half time. Thankfully
we took a 0-38 lead into the break and held on to win the
match 35-48. It was a great first forty minute display of
rugby, but, to win the tough matches, we will have to maintain
that high standard for the full eighty minutes of a game.
I am delighted to report that the mighty 2nd XV continued
their unbeaten season with a 21-40 win against Royal High
Corstorphine. Well done boys, and keep up your winning ways!
The 3rd XV also won their last match against Livingston
2nd XV 36-5.
I've been asked to put out an appeal for anyone who is
interested in being a referee. Whilst we all comment, usually
every positively, on the qualities of the referees, every
game needs a referee, and there is a shortage of willing
volunteers prepared to take responsibility for matches.
There are a number of courses coming up, and, if you would
like details, please speak to one of the Committee. There
is a need for more referees at all levels of the game.
On the social side, it's that time of year again when the
glad rags can get dusted off for the Rugby Club's Annual
Ball. This year it is being held on Saturday 29th November
2008 at the Corn Exchange, starting at 7 pm with a licence
until 2 am.
It's a Black Tie event and there will be a 3 course meal
followed by a disco with dancing until the small hours.
The cost per ticket is £37.50 or tables of 10 can
be reserved for £375. Please note that the maximum
number per table at the Corn Exchange is 10 people.
