Stew Mel vs Cartha
Queens Park, 17/11/07
Inverleith Angle
I extend a very warm welcome to Cartha Queens Park RFC,
their President Brian Gervaise, his committee and supporters
for this afternoon's game.
I am sure that all at the Club are proud of the selection
of Murray Allan, Lewis Calder, Angus Dixon, Adrian Duncan
and Ross Samson for the Scotland under-20 training squad.
They are joined by Jonny Baird and Lewis Niven, both of
whom played for the Stew Mel Lions with the Minis and Midis.
The 'mighty' 3rd XV recorded their fifth win in a row last
Saturday when they posted a 39-5 win over Falkirk 2nd XV.
It is interesting to note that our youth policy is paying
dividends in the 3rd XV, as three of the front row had a
combined age of 147 years! I'm told that one of them even
scored a try from a very short distance. Well done to Lindsay
Ross! The previous week, the 3rd XV beat Edinburgh University
17-22, and Danger scored three tries from a combined distance
of only 5 metres!
The 3rd XV are second in the 2nd XV League Division 4E
(Edinburgh & South) on 29 points. For those of you who
like facts, you might like to know that the 3rd XV have
used 54 players so far this season!
The 1st XV has now completed the first half of the League
campaign, and, despite being defeated in their first four
games, they have won the last seven games. The last match
against Cartha Queens Park was our second game of the season,
and we came away from Dumbreck with our tails between our
legs following a 53-14 defeat. Today's match will be a good
measure of how far this team has developed.
Since our last home match we've had two games on the road.
The first one was a great game against Haddington when we
won 12-25. The team were unable to sustain the high quality
rugby in the next match, but they still managed to win 8-36
against Musselburgh. The game against Musselburgh will be
remembered not for the rugby but for the high penalty count
and the six yellow cards, three to each side, that were
awarded.
In the Musselburgh match we welcomed Alex Edmonstone back
to the 1st XV for his first game since December 2005. It
looked as if Alex had never been away, and he even managed
to score a try.
In case you have missed the publicity, the Club are holding
a Race Night at Inverleith tonight. All are welcome! First
race is at 7:30 pm. Please bring your cheque books! It should
be a great night.
