Stew Mel vs Berwick,
11/12/04
Inverleith Angle
In our first home 'international' fixture of the season,
we welcome our friends from over the border, Berwick RFC.
In our earlier fixture, we ran out winners by 27-10 in a
very tight game. Their President, Jim Greenwood, would be
delighted with their progress since being promoted last
season. With a very young side, they have made a significant
impact and are currently placed fifth in the division. Last
week they had an excellent result in beating Peebles by
15-8 and I'm sure it will be a hard competitive game this
afternoon.
We maintained our promotion challenge last week with a
32-14 win over Kelso, and, with the bonus point secured,
we leapfrogged Jed-Forest to move back into second place.
Former hooker, Pete McLean, deserves special mention with
a brace of tries in his first appearance on the wing for
the 1st XV. It was not our most polished performance of
the season, but I'm sure our supporters will not complain
if we continue to get five points every week. Our other
scorers were two tries from Graham Lind, one try from Richard
Borthwick and two conversions and a penalty from Sam Hendry.
Tomorrow will see the long awaited Genesis report on the
future of Scottish Rugby. As you will be aware, it has had
an extremely difficult birth, but it is the Club's intention
to consult with as many people as possible within the Club
before any final voting intentions have been decided. I
hope that we will be able to put the whole report on the
web site, and any comments or observations would be much
appreciated before the final vote on the 30th January.
After a superb win against Melrose last Saturday by 19-11,
the Seconds are once again on the road with an extremely
difficult match against league leaders, Glasgow Hawks. Last
week was another gutsy win, and even coach 'Sesh' donned
the boots and came on as a sub when Sky Laurie was injured.
They have now moved up the league into mid-table and I'm
sure that, with another couple of wins, they will secure
their place for next season.
With the Thirds winning 10-0 against Watsonians, this was
our first whitewash of the season.
Our sponsors today are Abercrombie Financial and could I
thank them for their continued support at the Club and hope
that Robin Hendry and his guests have an enjoyable day.
The Christmas festivities start tonight with our annual
karaoke evening under the personal supervision of our VP
Gordon Rigby. I'm sure there will be some exceptional talent
on display. Malky MacColl, having just returned from Chicago,
will feature 'My Kind Of Town', and I'm certain he will
have lots more in store. With his young sister in attendance,
Graham Lind will, however, have to act the 'Father' figure
and have an alcohol free evening. It's free, and all are
welcome - if you want to take the chance!
