Two changes to the team this week, both in the forward
pack. Stuart Clark comes into the 2nd row to replace Alex
Clarke, who drops down to the 2nd XV. Dougie Rycroft is
unavailable this week due to University commitments, which
means a recall to the side for Gareth Flockhart, who, after
coming through the exertions of a sevens tournament in Dubai
last week, is fit enough to return.
Ross Rennie, on his return from the Commonwealth Youth
Games, has to make do with starting on the bench.
Riggers'
Review
A six try victory against our visitors from
over the Border saw us clinch our sixth try scoring bonus
point at Inverleith in seven attempts this season. We played
some pretty good stuff yesterday and were ably led by our
old pros in Graham Shiel and Gareth Flockhart, who, in the
end, gave us that little bit extra that was needed to see
off a massively improved Berwick team. Indeed, at 23-21
with 20 minutes of the match to go, we were under the cosh,
and the winning margin probably flattered us somewhat. Still,
Im not complaining!
The decisive moment came when Struan Samson decided to
kick through into the in-goal area and, with a degree of
precision that only he knew he possessed, he laid on the
try for Richard Borthwick. As Struan said later, it was
not only a 7 point decision; it was also a bonus point decision.
Good lad! This try was quickly followed by Kenny Bowie scampering
over in the corner for his first 1st XV try, which capped
a fine combative performance from Kenny in the unusual position
of replacement winger.
We managed to return to our yellow card collecting ways
again yesterday, with another two to add to the ever increasing
collection. We couldnt really complain about either
decision yesterday, although the Berwick number 5 must be
a lucky man to have stayed on the pitch on both occasions.
The yellow cards to Euan Clark and Shaun McMurchy mean that
they are ruled out of the tough local derby with Murrayfield
Wanderers next weekend. With Stephan Burger also unlikely
to shake off the knock he picked up yesterday, we will be
stretched to the limits for this encounter.
Sam Hendry passed the 100 points mark for the season yesterday
with a 17 point haul and has been a revelation in the outside
centre berth in recent weeks. Sam also moved over the 200
career points barrier for the 1st XV yesterday and, hopefully,
there is still plenty more to come from him.
As mentioned, it's off to Murrayfield Wanderers next Saturday
for our final league game of 2004. Heres hoping we
get a performance that will cheer us over the festive season.
Look forward to seeing you then.

Down in the first half and pegged back
to two points in the second half ... this is exactly
the type of game we need to tough out if we are to maintain
our promotion hopes, and that's exactly what the boys
did |
| Leading Lion |
There were a number of candidates for Leading Lion
today, but, on his return from injury, Gareth
Flockhart came in and gave the forwards
impetus from the base of the scrum and helped lead
a strong defensive effort

Er, pints of Schuttinger from their brewery tap in
Bremen, along with copious quantities of yummy Haake-Beck
in the city's Schnoor district. But I would have swapped
it all for a pint of minky Inverleith Carlsberg. Ahem
