Stew Mel vs Ayr, 28/1/06

Inverleith Angle

Welcome to Inverleith for today's crucial BT Premier 1 match with Ayr. Our destiny remains in our own hands at the moment. The equation is simple - win every match we play. Our last three league games have seen three victories, and we can only hope for a fourth in a row today. Our opponents, Ayr, are tucked away in relative safety, halfway up the league. Their league form at home has been outstanding, however they haven't travelled too well this season. Let's hope that continues today! To Ayr President Jock Craig and his fellow committee and supporters, welcome to Inverleith.

Last Saturday saw the romance of the Cup come to Inverleith, and, as has all too often been the case in this competition since its inception, we were well defeated by a team stationed below us in the leagues. Make no mistake, GHA were worthy winners, and, indeed, the 34-19 margin flatters us greatly. It was a strangely lethargic and subdued performance and very unlike the team of late. Those present would have witnessed an outstanding individual try by the young GHA winger Niall Cassie, and that was, at least, a bright spot for the day, even if it was scored against us.

I still believe the theory that the team were saving themselves for league business. Please don't let me down!

The 2nd XV played on Pitch 2 against Boroughmuir and edged a close encounter 13-5. It was a superb performance by the team, and Coaches David Hunter and Stuart Thom deserve plenty of credit for getting the team challenging at the other end of the table this season. Indeed, win our three games in hand and we will move level on points with the top two teams in the league. The Boroughmuir victory also saw the club record its sixth victory over our rivals this season, with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs all doing the double. When was the last time that happened? The 2nd XV entertain Jed-Forest today, and we wish them well.

The 3rd XV moved another step closer to glory with a comprehensive 33-14 victory over Watsonians. This puts the team 12 points clear of Watsonians in the league, although they do have a game in hand. More of the same against today's opponents, Heriot's at Goldenacre, would be very nice.

The 4th XV are also in action this afternoon in what starts to be a busy spell for them. Next Saturday they entertain a team from Lyon and this continues the good work done by Mark Coyle in getting the numbers out on the pitch this season.

As well as the 3rd and 4th XVs being at home next Saturday, Mark Paton and Andy Cadzow will be starring for the Scottish Grain Trade versus their French counterparts on the back pitches. So, if a trip to the Greenyards is too much for you, then there will be plenty to keep you entertained at Inverleith.

A special welcome today to our guests from the School. All the Sixth Year rugby players, as well as the 1st XV, have been invited down as our guests, and they are the future of the Club. I hope they enjoy what they see, and that we can look forward to welcoming them as new players in the Summer. The School 1st XV were in action last night at Murrayfield in the final of the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup, and, hopefully, they will have come home with the Silverware.
