Stew Mel vs Aberdeen
Grammar, 25/2/06
Inverleith Angle
Welcome to Inverleith for today's BT Premier 1 league match
with Aberdeen Grammar School FP. To their President Alex
Forrester, and all your players, committee and supporters,
I hope you enjoy your afternoon of rugby.
After a strong all round performance against Hawick, we
safely pocketed the points to record our sixth win on the
trot. Only Hawks and Hawick have bettered that kind of consistency
this season, yet we still find ourselves in the relegation
zone with three matches to play. I guess that gives you
an idea of how much we have improved since the first half
of the season. The Hawick game also saw us reach the three
try mark for the fifth time this season without going on
to secure the bonus point, and what a difference they would
make to our position at this stage. Still, three more victories
could see us finish third or fourth in the league, so there
is still plenty to play for!
Our match against Aberdeen earlier in the season brought
a 35-23 defeat, but also saw one of our better performances
on the road. Indeed, with 60 minutes of that match gone,
we led 18-16, until three tries in the last quarter took
the game out of our reach. We know, therefore, that we can
compete with Aberdeen, and, once again, the team will give
everything they have to try and pull off another victory.
The 2nd XV, after a good run of form, have come unstuck
in the last couple of weeks, with two defeats in rearranged
league games hampering their championship aspirations. Two
weeks ago Biggar won 25-12 in a very disappointing performance,
and this was followed up last weekend with a trip down to
Jed-Forest which resulted in a 23-5 defeat. This means that,
in the space of three weeks, Jed managed to turn a 38-7
defeat at Inverleith into a comfortable victory, which is
quite impressive. The fact that their 1st XV weren't in
action last Saturday wouldn't have anything to do with it,
of course
The 3rd XV have had a break from league action in the last
month. In their only game, they lost to Edinburgh Northern's
1st XV 22-7 at Inverleith Park. Manager Mark Coyle has been
struggling with numbers in the last couple of weeks due
to International weekends, but the team should be back to
full strength for its final couple of league games against
Murrayfield Wanderers and Edinburgh Accies. A couple more
wins should be enough to ensure the league title for the
3rd XV.
The 4th XV played last week against a Forrester XV, and,
in a very hard and tight game, a 17-10 victory was achieved.
The game marked the reappearance of Simon Capaldi in club
colours, and you'll be pleased to know Simon hasn't changed
one bit when on the field of play! The 4th XV take on a
House of Commons XV on the back pitches today. We don't
know yet whether any MPs will be in action against our lot,
but I'm sure they will be looked after accordingly.
On the representative front, Colin Goudie, Richard Vernon
and Dave McCall were all selected to play against England
at U19 level at The Stoop last night. Andrew Easson would
have joined them but for an injury he picked up against
France. Ross Rennie has returned from Wellington and LA
with two Bowl Winners' medals, and is preparing for the
Commonwealth Games and Hong Kong Sevens. Ross Samson played
last week in the Edinburgh U18 victory over the Scottish
Borders and contributed two tries.
