Will the Scottish Lions spring a surprise?

The key to the success of the club can only be measured by the new generation of players, coaches and helpers that emerge every season. Thankfully, we continue to have a stream of new recruits. I briefly watched the P3 and the Lion cubs training on Sunday. The sessions were organised, fun and enthusiastic - the special ingredients that make children want to come and train when the weather becomes colder. Well done to Naill Stirling who has taken over the Lion cubs and the P3 coaches Richard Macdonald and Dougie Ryecroft.

The P5 and P6 age groups had a very successful trip down to Musselburgh. They played some wonderful rugby and I am told that the Musselburgh 'Stovies' were worth the trip alone!

The P4, P7 and some S1 stayed at Inverleith and had to endure a tackling, rucking and mauling session taken by yours truly. The ground was soft and ideal for tackling. I certainly had a great time and the players improved considerably throughout the session. I was not too popular with some of the parents as the players were covered from head to toe in mud!

The Lions were represented at the Scotland v Romania international at Murrayfield last week. I supervised a group of P6 and P7 boys. They enjoyed the atmosphere but the Scottish rugby was rusty. Lets just hope that the Scots have a spring in their step so they can beat the Boks for the first time since 1969.

(Stew Mel Lions? , Worcester & Scotland)

Incidentally, Sandy Hinshelwood from Stewart's FP was playing in that match. His son Ben was brought up in Australia. He has made it into the Scotland team - he needs a home in Edinburgh, so I think we should adopt him as an honorary Lion.
