Happy New Year!

Well, another year has come and gone - 'only 11 months to go till Christmas', my youngest Isobel announced yesterday?!!

Of course, I am sure everyone ate and drank too much and are in need of exercise. New Year resolutions regarding diet and exercise will have been made with the best of intentions. However, it is important that the children get some exercise after a break of nearly a month. Therefore, all age groups (Mums and Dads are invited to join in) have will have training regardless of the weather at Queensferry Road or Ravelston Dykes. It is vital that the children attend these sessions. It is important that fitness levels are maintained. So, make sure you are ready for some hard Sundays over the next few weeks as I am sure your coaches will be putting you through the mill.

I am pleased to announce that Ben Hinshelwod has accepted our invitation to become an honorary Stew Mel Lion. He has promised to come down to Inverleith as soon as he gets a chance. In the meantime, I had a brief chat with him, click here and you can find out more about Ben.

The first half of the season has been very successful. The club has played some scintillating rugby and we have been victorious on many occasions. Membership has been sustained and there appears to be another crop of keen Lion cubs gleefully learning rugby skills. The only disappointment has been the S1 and S2 failing to qualify for the Scottish cup. Both teams acquitted themselves with distinction but they were beaten by strong Borders teams. There is no doubt that better match preparation is needed for next year and that the strongest possible teams are available and ready for the Scottish Cup matches.

The senior club is still battling away to secure promotion. There are four remaining games against Haddington, Edinburgh Accies, Corstorphine and Dunfermline. In short, we have to win these matches and I would encourage you to come and support the team over the next few months. It is essential for the development of the club that we gain promotion and offer the talented youngsters coming from school and the Lions the environment to develop their rugby skills against stronger teams. We cannot afford to lose anymore talented players like Matt Dey (Heriot's), Jamie Blackwood (Melrose), Andrew Kelly (Currie), Stephen Laurie (Currie), Chris Capaldi (Plymouth) and Sam Hendry (Boroughmuir).

And the next crop of 'stars' are emerging from the School and the Lions. The Stewart's Melville 1stXV are undefeated. They have been playing fine rugby and are in the quarter finals of the Scottish Schools cup. The senior club held a lunch for this year's school leavers and for players that played for the Lions until two years ago. These players who do not attend the school but are in the Edinburgh Pathway teams are now 18 and searching for a senior club. The event was very successful as over 30 attended.

The New Year, 2003 should prove to be enthralling for the whole club. Let's hope that the senior club gains promotion, the School 1stXV win the Scottish Cup and that the Lions continue to play exciting rugby. We can even dream that Scotland win the Six Nations and the World Cup.

Now that would really be a Happy New Year!
