Lions - kings
of rugby
Stewart's Melville College narrowly lost to
Dollar Academy in a thrilling Bell Lawrie White Scottish
Schools Cup Final in early February. The boys played hard
and were beaten by an equally good team who the College
beat at Inverleith early in the season. This will be small
comfort for them but they are part of a momentum that is
gathering pace at Inverleith. The senior team won promotion
to Division 2 with an emphatic win against Edinburgh Accies.
They ran in 8 tries playing a style of rugby that is Stewart's
Melville, school and club. We play rugby the way it should
be - fast and open requiring high skill levels and we should
all be proud.
It is also worth noting that the Royal High
School won the Plate Final in the Scottish School cup and
many of the players were part of the Stew Mel Lions team
that dominated mini and midi rugby from P4 to S4 during
the 1990s. We hope that many of these boys will join the
senior club next season and we look forward to seeing the
likes of Ben Cairns and Alan Macdonald back in Lions shirts.
The junior club has been quiet because the
weather has ruined the fixture list but the enthusiasm I
have witnessed from the age groups while completing their
indoor training at Ravelston and Mary Erskine has been very
satisfying. There are many tournaments and games in the
coming months and I am sure that the club will meet with
great success.
But remember that winning is not that important
- that you try your hardest and play in the Stewart's Melville
style is vital.
