The last try!
The season is nearly at an end with only the
Haddington Tournament to play this weekend. It should be
a fitting finale as every age group including the P3s will
be playing. I have been watching and have completed some
coaching sessions with the younger age groups over the last
couple of months and have been very impressed with the continuing
high standard of play. The P4 and P5 have won several Tournaments
but it is the style of play that has really stood out. This
reflects greatly on the quality of the coaching the boys
are receiving and the club must thank all those involved
this season from the coaches, volunteers, to the Mums and
Dads who ferry the children to matches and training. Of
course, well done to all the players.
The P6 and P7 have continued to play sparkling
rugby. The P6 were outstanding at Melrose and the P7 were
simply breathtaking in winning the Currie Tournament on
Sunday. They played five matches, scored thirty four
tries and conceded only one. All these age groups play
rugby the way it should be - fast, open with considerable
individual and team skills.
I step down as Chairman of the club in June
and it gives me great pleasure to see the progress that
is being made in every age group. Ray Campbell (P5) is to
take over as Chairman and I wish him and his new committee
every success as they continue to develop the club over
the coming years. Already progress and improvements have
been made under Ray's direction. A review of coaching methods
and skill development for all the age groups has been undertaken.
A coaching structure has been drawn up for the start of
next season. This is based on the SRU core skills and practices
and can be viewed by following this link.
Finally, there are several other committee
members who are to step down in June and I would like to
thank them for all the hard work and support over the last
two years. Neil Shaw (Membership), Andrew Sutherland (Tournament
and sponsorship), Steven Paterson (Ground convenor), Mike
Baynham (S1 age group manager), Ian Duguid (S2 age group
manager), David Gill (P7 age group manager) and Lindsay
Hamilton (Tours) have worked tirelessly for the benefit
of the children and the club. I would also like to thank
Chris Anderson our secretary for the mini club. He has been
involved from the birth of the club and only now is his
son playing in the Lion cubs! He must qualify for parole
soon! I do not think he has ever missed a meeting and his
good legal counsel has always kept the club and me on the
correct course.
So, Haddington on Sunday - one last try -
let's hope for success and make a soon to be ex chairman
very happy!
