Stew Mel Roar
Stewart's Melville College 1st XV beat Edinburgh
Academy 17-15 in a thrilling Bell Lawrie White Scottish
Schools Cup semi final at Myreside on Wednesday. It was
a great team display and Duncan Calder was named Man of
the Match. The picture below shows him being being congratulated
by Marc Wilkinson, Bell Lawrie White and Graeme Burns, Scotland,
Edinburgh Gunners and Stewart's Melville. It is particularly
satisfying to see Duncan play with such skill as he was
one of the first to play for the Lions when the club was
founded eight years ago. Click here

The final is to be played on Thursday 6th
February at Murrayfield, kick off 7:00pm. The Thistle suite
will be open from 5:30pm so there is the opportunity to
have a drink to get into the spirit of the night! It is
important that we mobilise as much support as we can for
the boys - so put on the red, gold and black and shout them
on at Murrayfield.
The senior club has an equally crucial game
against Edinburgh Accies on Saturday 1st February - kick
off 3:00pm. If they win, they will be promoted to Division
2 of the Premier League. The pitch is being heated to prevent
the game being cancelled due to frost. Please try and support
them.
It has taken over a year to organise but the
P7 tour to France will be flying out to Paris on the 19th
February. It is by far the most ambitious trip undertaken
and it is testament to the confidence within the club.

Top row: (left to right) J Smith, R Muir,
J Sutherland, N Cornbleet, A Robertson.
Middle Row: A Chisholm, J Campbell, A Hamilton, R Grant,
R Paterson.
Front Row: C Gill, G Milne, C O'Donnell, S Brewster, S Shaw.
All the plans are coming together - over £7000
was raised - so the boys costs have been covered. The fixtures,
clothing, meals, and hotel arrangements have been confirmed.
In fact, Lindsay Hamilton, Tour Manager has just returned
from a weekend in Paris to confirm all the details of the
trip. Our host club PUC are thrilled and excited to be playing
us and will provide very tough opposition. Most importantly,
Lindsay returned home with tickets for the Scotland v France
match for the whole tour party. Unfortunately, we will not
be able to meet Ben Hinshelwood when we meet the Scotland
team as he is injured. The club wishes him a speedy recovery
for World Cup.
The tour will provide memories of a lifetime
and it has been a fantastic effort from the boys, brothers,
sisters, parents and coaches organising such a trip. I sincerely
hope that this tour creates the precedent that will see
at least the P7 age group completing an overseas tour every
year.
Finally, I am pleased to report that several
new committee members were elected at the recent meeting
in January. Raymond Campbell will take over as Chairman
from myself in June and Mike Johnson is to take on the newly
created role of Marketing and Communications Convenor. Richard
MacDonald is to take over as Membership Secretary from Neil
Shaw who I must thank for all his hardwork in this role
for the last six years. It is very satisfying to view the
next group of young rugby players emerging but equally satisfying
to see the next generation of administrators coming through
the club. There is no shortage of volunteers with considerable
talents and I am confident that the Stew Mel Lions is in
good hands.
