A good week for Stewart’s Melville Rugby
Last Saturday, the Senior Club 1st XV re-vitalised their fight against relegation by pulling off a great victory against Falkirk (3rd December). Driving up to Sunnyside, the cemetery filled one with foreboding but the subsequent result made resurrection a possibility. The RBG played with a real sense of passion and determination and thoroughly deserved their 20-27 victory (Gavin’s full report has already been published on the website). However, tomorrow’s visit to Rubislaw is just as important as we are vying for position with the Aberdeen side in the bargain basement. As ever, they would appreciate your support with a 2pm kick -off and the Granite City is a great place for a day out!
On Wednesday night, the College 1st XV played Dollar Academy in a pulsating Scottish Schools Cup Final in front of over 5,000 spectators at Murrayfield. This was a fantastic game, played in great spirit, with the RBG squeezing home with the very last play of the game (36-32) to great excitement in one camp and despair in the other. In my opinion, the boys did not quite hit the heights of performance of which they are capable but still showed enough guts, determination and skill to deservedly win the cup. However, commiserations to Dollar who also played with great style and gave their all. Being pipped at the death at Murrayfield has also happened to SM and we know exactly how they feel! There will no doubt be many more great encounters between the two sides in the coming years.
Other games tomorrow see the Senior 2nd XV play Stirling at Bridgehaugh, while the Mighty 3’s play Currie in the return fixture at Inverleith with a 2pm kick off. It is rumoured that Fin has persuaded one or two Stew Mel greats to come out of retirement so it could be an interesting watch!
