Stewart’s Melville College secure a place in the Scottish Schools Under 18 Cup final

An accomplished second half performance saw SM win their place in the Cup Final at Murrayfield on Wednesday 7th December at 7.45p.m where they will face Dollar Academy.
A nervous and error strewn first 25 minutes did not bode well and saw a 13 point deficit at the hands of a strong Merchiston side. However, good discipline and ball retention in the remaining minutes of the half produced sustained pressure in the Colinton XV’s 22 which eventually allowed Jacob Lineen to score out wide (just before the referee’s whistle brought the first period of play to an end).

In retrospect, this was a crucial try that allowed the boys to play with increasing confidence as they took the game to Merchiston and scored an unanswered 28 points in the second half. The forwards seized control of the breakdown and line-out, and gained parity at scrummage time. The backs thrived on the quick, accurate possession and increasingly found gaps in a strong defence to produce 4 further tries. It was great to see – if a little hard on the nerves – that when gaining a 20-13 lead that there was no question of shutting up shop (as many senior sides might have done) with attacks being launched from all areas of the pitch to produce a further 2 scores. Also a word for the defence — Merchiston continued to threaten but it held firm and resisted everything thrown at it. In summary, this was a game fit for a final even if I have to own up to a little bias!

Congratulations to the boys, and coaches Lockie and Moran, who have now gained a place in the final as well as coming out on top of the Conference.

Mighty 3’s

The Mighty 3’s, due to the Autumn International break, where the only senior section team in action last week. They lost narrowly to Currie and Fin’s usual illuminating match report is on the website.

Senior Section Fixtures for Saturday 3rd December

The 2nd XV have another barren Saturday, before playing Stirling County on the 10th December, while the Mighty 3’s are on their travels again as they undertake the arduous journey to Dalkeith.
The 1st XV resume their National 1 League campaign with a tricky trip to Stirlingshire to play Falkirk at Sunnyside (Dorrator Road, Falkirk, FK27YW) with a 2pm kick-off. After promotion, Falkirk have been going well this season and find themselves in the top echelons of the league. Every game is vital to the RBG as we try to claw our way out of the reaches of the relegation zone. The boys would really appreciate your support so why not have a date out in the Central Region?
