Down Inverleith Way 13

Saturday was a day of reckoning for the Senior 1st XV. Win and National League 1 status assured — lose and tortured nerves continue to frazzle. It rained heavily for 36 hours; Inverleith was transformed into a water fowl sanctuary and all home games were cancelled; a haar shrouded the 3 towering pillars of the new Queensferry Crossing; but Duffus Park was playable and the dangerous Howe of Fife were waiting like a wounded animal in their lair desperately fighting for their own survival. Glaur, mist and a slippery ball are not usually conducive to Stewart’s Melville rugby and the Fifers must have been relishing the prospect of taking on the ‘city slickers’ on such a dreach day.

However, in truth, the RBG should have had this game well won by half-time. Scrum dominance provided numerous opportunities for tries but somehow every chance was cast away through a lack of control, patience and, sometimes it has to be said, sheer bad luck. Instead of turning around with a comfortable lead the margin was a mere 5 points (07-12). As is often the case, such profligacy can come back to bite you and so it transpired with Howe dominating possession and largely territory for the last 20 minutes. Thankfully, our defence was absolutely resolute and repelled everything that was thrown at it – surely a tribute to all the hard work that has gone on at training throughout the season and to a “never say die” attitude that has evolved throughout the last few months.

As Gav, our very own philosopher and unique pundit, says in his usual excellent match report, “This is a game that could easily have been lost” — but it wasn’t!! No points were scored in the second half leaving the final score 12-07 to the RBG. There are 3 games left for the Senior 1st XV and one thing that is certain is that Sesh, Jingles and Cash will not allow any slackening of effort. The target should be to finish off the season in style.

Saturday 11th March Hamilton Inverleith 2pm
Saturday 25th March Dundee Mayfield 3pm
Saturday 1st April Falkirk Inverleith 3pm

This coming Saturday will hopefully also see the Senior 2nd XV back in action (after the disappointment of the postponement of the Edinburgh Accies match) as they are due to meet Boroughmuir at Meggatland. The Colleges 1st XV are also due to play their last XV-a-side match (against Dundee High School) at Mayfield before embarking on a series of Sevens tournaments. These are:

Sunday 12th March Mechiston Colinton
Saturday 18th March Heriot’s Goldenacre
Tuesday 21st March Caritas Myreside.

The Stewart’s Melville Rugby Academy is embarking on a rugby tour/adventure weekend at the end of March. 5 Sevens teams are travelling to Aboyne to take part in a tournament with Mackie and Royal Deeside before undertaking a series of outdoor activities organised by the Royal Marines. As the Academy Director, Ross McNulty says, “If it is good enough for the Scotland team, then it should be good enough for our Academy players!”

Finally, good luck to Scotland on Saturday. Why not come to Inverleith to support the Senior 1st XV playing Hamilton (2pm kick off) before watching the International on the big screen?
