Down Inverleith Way 10
On the face of it, not a great Saturday for Stewart’s Melville Rugby. The Colleges 1st XV lost their Scottish unbeaten record by 1 point to, of all people, Watson’s; the senior 1st XV lost to GHA by the agonisingly close margin of two points; and the Mighty 3’s went down to Dunfermline 2nds by 5 points in an 81 point thriller. Only the senior 2nd XV can have little complaint as they succumbed to a powerful GHA 2nd XV, although after a disastrous first half they can lay claim to drawing the second period 17-17. On the plus side, 65 players represented the senior club and the Senior 1st XV were bitterly disappointed to lose, despite narrowing the deficit from the first encounter of 61 points to just 2. This, however, will be of little consolation to the players or the coaches. It was also great to see Nick McCashin returning to the fray after a desperately long injury lay-off – if he can avoid any further mishap this will give a major boost of confidence for the games ahead.
There are comprehensive reports of all 3 matches on the website so there is little need to say more! The Senior 1st XV don’t now play again until Saturday 11th February when they face one of the pacesetters in National League 1, Edinburgh Accies at Inverleith. Wouldn’t it be nice ——?! However, the Senior 2nd XV and the Mighty 3’s have vital league matches at Inverleith this Saturday (28th January). The Mighty 3’s play Inverleith 2nds with a 12.30 kick-off and the 2nd XV play the rearranged game with Musselburgh starting at 2.30. The College 1st XV, smarting to put last week’s disappointing performance right, play Heriot’s on Pitch 1 at 10.30. If you haven’t seen them yet this season, they play a very exciting brand of rugby. Why not make a day of it and watch an extravaganza of RBG rugby?!
