2nd XV vs Ayr: Match Report

It is getting to the stage of the season where injuries and motivation are starting to take their toll, so it was a tough effort to get 16 boys across to Ayr. The boys who did make it across did the club proud, though.

The forwards knew it was going to be a long day at the office after Ayr’s dominance at the first scrum, especially in the first half when we were playing uphill and on a wet pitch. It was always going to be a tough first half, given the steep gradient of the pitch and the Ayr 10’s obsession with kicking it into the corners, But the boys stepped up to the mark and kept fighting through the whole first period. Only after sustained pressure did Ayr manage to squeeze over with a pick and go.

Mickey managed to slot over a couple of penalties which kept us in touch. We were unlucky not to get over the line in the first half with some good breaks from Steve, Jonny and Christy.

We started the second half much better, and the backs were starting to dominate Ayr’s backline. So, after a few quick phases, Steve Sims found himself with a massive gap in front of him, which he darted through to score under the posts. This gave us the lead for the first time in the match.

We then seemed to switch off, allowing Ayr to get a lineout in our 22 which they drove well; after some further picking and going, they got over the line. Steve Sims was then (probably) harshly yellow carded for putting his foot through a ruck. Ayr then added another penalty to give them a four point lead.

After some great stepping in the midfield by Mickey, he stretched his legs and took us into the Ayr half. From the resulting position on the park, some good hands gave Jordan some space and he went on a strong run into the home 22, with only a good covering tackle stopping him from getting over the line.

We then spent the rest of the game camped in the Ayr 22. After the forwards did some good picking and going, the ball was fed out to the backs; Christy took the ball at pace and did exceptionally well to beat two defenders to score in the dying seconds of the game.

After struggling to get a team out, it was great to come away with a win against a good Ayr team. With the boys in good spirits, we had a good bus trip back, followed by a messy court session back at Invers.
