2nd XV v GHA Match Report
GHA 2 XV 53 Stewarts Melville 2 XV 20
A cracking day for rugby despite pretty heavy going but as the saying goes we started the 1st half badly and fell away.
A 36 – 3 deficit at half time was a fair reflection and of course the game was over at this stage.
GHA dominated possession from the first whistle and had enough good players to punish us at every opportunity. In many ways it was like watching a Stew/Mel side play in that they seemed to have plenty (too many!) of options in attack.
A rare forte into the hosts 25 resulted in Jack Calder kicking our only points in the first half which was a shame as our dangerous backs hardly touched the ball in an attacking sense.
Full credit to GHA however and they played some fine rugby in running in 6 tries in the opening half.
Some harsh but accurate words from captain Scott Cubitt at the interval had the desired effect, this is a pretty honest group of rugby players who recognised that in the main their tackling desire had made life far too easy for GHA. However the team responded well, the 2nd half was a different story. The boys deserve great credit for sharing the game 17 -17 after the interval with three fine tries scored, the creative attacking skills of Andrew Warnock and Euan Bowen showing up well in the last 10/15 minutes, Jack Sommerville displayed a real thirst for defensive duties coupled with some direct running…whilst Scott C and Euan Miller covered acres of space in attack and defence….Paul Dixon will have benefitted hugely from another 80 mins and put in 2/3 noticeable big tackles, Willie M kept at it with 3/4 darts in the second half. Back to Captain Cubitt for the last word…”we had to work really hard for our tries whilst they didn’t”…summed the day up am afraid! Rugby remains a simple game, next week Musselburgh, let’s get the tackling sorted, the rest of our game will look after itself.
